I was raised in a large and loving Roman Catholic family. As a child, I was aware that God existed, but didn’t really have a sense of what real difference that made in my life. Like all who spend their lives in futile pursuits, I lived to satisfy the selfish desires of my sinful heart. Until one evening in early 1997 The Sovereign Lord took pity upon my miserable state and regenerated me! My experience is summed up well in the hymn “And Can It Be That I Should Gain”:

“Long my imprisoned spirit lay, fast bound in sin and nature’s night
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray, I woke, the dungeon flamed with light
My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee

No condemnation now I dread, Jesus, and all in Him, is mine
Alive in Him, my living Head, and clothed in righteousness divine
Bold I approach the eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ my own
Amazing love! How can it be that Thou my God, should die for me?”
